The A-Series is a global standard. This means that an A5 wedding order of service booklet, for example, will always be an A5 booklet, no matter where you are in the world. In essence, any piece of paper that has the correct ratios (height vs length) is considered to be in the A-Class.
This ratio has the unique property of having the same aspect ratio when folded in half lengthwise. When folded in half lengthwise, A0 (which is designed to have a surface area of one square meter) becomes a piece of A1. This becomes an A2 piece, and so on. This is also true for the other two major paper-size families: B and C.
